Tips for Managing Work and School

In today’s world, the majority of students enrolled in university or career training courses need to work at least part time to be able to afford their education, not to mention everyday expenses such as rent or room and board, food, transportation, etc. So how does one manage both education and a career? Here are some helpful tips to assist you with finding a healthy balance between work and school.

One of the first things you need to determine is if you need to work full time and attend school part time, perhaps in the evening. Or can you afford to go to school full time and work part time? Either way, there are some sacrifices that need to be made and you need to be sure about your decision, and you will be able to realistically manage whichever path you choose.

Look for a job with flexible hours

Finding a job with flexibility is extremely important. You cannot commit to a 9 to 5 job if you are a full time student. You may have to sacrifice your nights and weekends in order to find a job that best compliments your schedule. There are plenty of part time and full time jobs available that offer flexible hours. They make considerations for students, but you need to be firm with them and give them a set schedule of when you can and cannot work. Also, if you know you are going to need additional time off for a big project or to study for exams, make sure to request this time off well in advance.

Take online courses if possible

Online degrees and certifications are becoming the norm these days. You might not be able to take all of your classes online, as some do require hands on training, but a lot of programs are designed to be completed online. This can save you a lot of time and money so you will be better able to manage your schedule.

Budget your time accordingly

Time management is the key. If you can easily budget your time then you can successfully manage both school and work. You may have to make some sacrifices when it comes to your social life, but in the end it will be worth it. Set aside enough time for your work commute and for your studies as well. If you take public transportation to work, use that time to brush up on your studies. This also applies to your breaks as well. Make the best use of your time. Prioritize and make a “to do list” everyday to make sure that you are staying on track.

Don’t take on more than you can handle

If you know that you cannot handle a 40 hour work week, then schedule yourself for 20-30 hours a week. The same goes for your course load. Do not take more classes or credits than you can handle. Know when to say no. Do not sacrifice your health for your job or school. Make sure you are maintaining a healthy diet and getting proper sleep as well. You won’t do well in either work or school if your physical or mental health is suffering.
