Does Quality Security Guard Training Really Make a Difference?

With violence, terrorism, and other crime on the rise, it is becoming critical that security guards worldwide are properly trained in all aspects of their job. Security guards need to be trained in a vast array of specialized fields such as protecting high level celebrities and politicians and even lower key jobs such as security for a hotel, bar, restaurant or retail establishment.

Every security guard officer should participate in rigorous, detailed training in a wide variety of areas and scenarios. These include general safety, health, and customer service. Of course, this varies by the specific job and department, but every security guard, in this day and age, should be prepared for any scenario.

It is a good idea for security guards to be crossed-trained in a number of areas as this can help eliminate liability on the part of the particular security guard as well as the firm for which they work as well as their clients. This means that the better trained a guard is the less volatile a situation will be. Also, the security guard will be able to quickly, safely and effective handle any situation which could arise. This also ensures that they are fully aware of the legal rights concerning  all of the parties involved in the situation.

Quality training also ensures that the security guards are less likely to be involved in lawsuits as they are fully aware of the legal aspects of their job. Once they have completed all the required training for necessary for their position, they can be held liable for their actions. This will, in turn, make them more aware of their actions and less likely to act in a manner that may place them, or their clients, in situations that are considered dangerous or unethical.

Extensive training for security guards also ensures that they are able to deal any scenario that should arise such as illness, accident, weather emergency, break in, hostage situation or almost any other potential situation that may occur in this high profile job title.

A high-quality security guard training program should offer training in the following areas:

  • Fire
  • First Aid
  • CPR
  • Customer Service
  • Hostage Situations
  • Customer Service
  • Gun Control
  • Communication Skills
  • Emergency procedures and evacuations
  • Self-Defense
  • Guard Duty
  • Filing Reports
  • Law & legislation

Being highly skilled in the aforementioned areas will ensure that every security guard is equipped to handle their job. It will help their employer have confidence in their overall ability and the training which they have received. Quality security guard training can only help the security guard in landing a decent job. Employers look for extensive quality training from a respected security guard training program when they are looking to hire a security guard for their establishment.

Companies should take the time to make sure that they are only hiring security guards that have been adequately trained and are licensed security guards. They also need to make sure that these guards are CPR and first aid certified as well. It is then their responsibility to train the security guard on the regulations involving their specific job to eliminate any legal incidents.
